If you don’t care for the back story, skip down to the steps. Our company recently acquired another company. They have around 40 employees and are running Small Business Server 2011. My goal is to completely decommission that server and move users and services to our main AD domain. One of the downsides with SBS is that you cannot build a trust relationship with another forest. In the past, with other acquisitions, I have built trusts and setup linked mailboxes in Exchange, been able to share file services, etc. Can’t do that in SBS. I have been through an SBS migration with another company we acquired a few years back, but that was only about 12 people, and we did the whole thing in a weekend.
This time, I was going to start picking off things one by one, starting with email. The approach is that it would become like a “hosted exchange” (separate username, password, etc.) Started with creating accounts in our domain. Ran PST exports from SBS and imported into our Exchange a weekend prior. Then, the following weekend, exported just the past week’s and cutover the MX records.
